CANADIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS AT SASKATOON

CANADIAN GOLD KAITLIN

Well, the final results for the 18 and unders are in and our 4 bowlers really did Ontario proud!
Kaitlin and Stephanie staged another of their classic battles, with Kaitlin completing her undefeated string, emerging with a 21-18 victory to take the gold, while Stephanie took home the silver.
CANADIAN GOLD KODY
Tied at 14-14, Stephanie counted a 4 ender to go up 18-14, but Kaitlin beared down and counted the rest of the way.
On the boys side Kody got off to a slow start, scaring us by getting behind 12-1, but roared back to outscore Cameron LeFresne 20-1 over the remaining ends to claim a 21-13 victory and the gold.
Dylan staged a come back of his own with some excellent clutch draws to win 21-19 over Grant Wilkie and capture the bronze.
All in all it was a wonderful experience for the bowlers and fans and the Nutana Bowling Club was a great host.
[ Thanks to Terry Ryan and Andy Caldwell for their reports and photos.]

GOLD Kaitlin Ryan Ontario'A and Kody Olthof Ontario'B'
SILVER Stephanie Miller Ontario'B' and Cameron LeFresne Nova Scotia

A7 4:00 PM Kody rolls to gold medal game with his 7th straight win and the way I read the rules Dylan will play for bronze based on the tie breaking formula. His loss to Cameron Lefresne way back in Round 1 sends Cameron up and Dylan down after they both finished with 12 match points.

A 7 12:45 AM Kaitlin and Stephanie playing for gold makes a statement. Both girls are talented bowlers so it will be a dandy final.
A very interesting scenario in the Junior Men with a 4 way tie in match points possible after the Round Robin. We know who will be playing for the medals but all positions are up for grabs.
BCB have changed the tie breaking system to the World Bowl's formula which decides final positions mathematically rather than playing tie breaking games.
If Kody wins his game , he plays for the top prize. If Kody loses his game and there is the 4 way tie and he scores at least 13 points, he will still play for gold.
Unfortunately for Dylan he can only direct the bowls mentally and not physically in Round 9. He really wants his friend Kody to win - and his new friend Devon Nickerson to do the same. In fact it is almost a necessity if he wishes to climb to the top of the podium.
The second tie breaker is the result of the head to head match in the Round Robin. Dylan lost to Cameron LeFresne.
Mind you there is a real chance the 4 bowlers could end up with 12 match points by 10:00 AM later to-day . The next the tie breaker is the differential ( points for minus points against ) in the games played among the 4 tied players.
Obviously a well matched and skilled group of young bowlers will bring the National Championship to an exciting conclusion.
Did I mention how I did in Math in school?

A6 A healthy dose of family connections have qualified to play this tournament. I am surmising the leader of the Junior Men standings after Day One, Cameron LeFresne, has close family ties with 2007 Champion Lindsay. I will wager a 'bob' that Jaymee Sidel is a sister to former National Team member Sherrey. I know that Chris Trites is a brother of Chad Trites the 2007 Canadian 'Major' Singles Champion. And Michael Pituley is a product of the massed talented Sask. Pituley clan.

A6 -12:30 AM Terry Ryan and Andy Caldwell sent very complete information from Day One action.
We had a great start to the tournament under sunny skies this morning. After the opening ceremonies, all of the Ontario kids played their first game. The girls fared better than the boys, both winning their first match, while the boys got off to a slow start losing their first round games. The second game matched Kaitlin against Stephanie, so Ontario was guaranteed a win from that match, with Kaitlin storming back to take the game. Both boys won their second round games. The third game saw Kaitlin win an unbelievable come back from down 11-2 and 19-14, to win 21-19 and go undefeated for the day. [insert- This game was against Lindsay Lefresne, the 2007 Canadian Champion BB]Dylan and Kody both played well and took victories in their third round games. The girls were done for the day and Kody had his bye game in the fourth round. Dylan played and came back after trailing the whole game to win 21-19. [ insert - An important win against a strong contender, Grant Wilkie BB]

A5 -11:30 PM A good day for the Ontario contingent. Kaitlin Ryan won all 3 games and has already clinched a medal round position and almost certainly will play for gold. Dylan Jacobs lost his first and then stormed back with 3 straight wins. Kody Olthof followed the same pattern with a first round loss and then won his next two before resting in the evening with a bye. Stephanie Miller's one loss was to her Ontario travelling companion Kaitlin but her win was over 2007 champ Lindsay LeFresne and finished with a 1-1 record on the day.

11:10 PM Noreen Welsh is on site with her family supporting Dylan Jacobs and the other Ontario bowlers of course and has sent Ontario results through as soon as she got back to the hotel.

Day one is completed and searching for scores. Working the contact list but the airwaves are quiet. The Junior Men have 9 teams, the Junior Women 5 teams. Both groups will play a single round robin with the top four teams qualifying for the medal round.
