WORLD JUNIOR CUP SELECTION 2010 AT LONDON FAIRMONT

Monday 9:30 PM - Men
There are 6 players vying for 4 medal positions as they enter the last round of eleven. Lots of games and the only thing we know about this group is that the defending champion Dylan Jacobs will play for Gold again.
It speaks highly of the quality of play of the Canadian 2010 World qualifier.
What is unique in this situation is that the top 6 all play each other. No so called easier route to follow to the podium for anyone. You want it, you get it.
If Jon Pituley and Alex Scott win their games and tie on points, Alex moves to the rematch with Dylan basrd on his 2-1 win over Jon in the Round Robin.
However if they should lose , Jon has the number 1 Dylan and Alex the 'smokin' finishing Trevor Whyte, the game of leap frog is in full gear.
And don't forget Malcolm Whyte and Kody Olthof. One of this pair could be in but then again they both could be out.
It is best that to see the math solved, you drop into Fairmont to watch the permutations evolve.
Women
It is a little simpler for the ladies. Defending champion Kelly McKerihen plays a role in the selection of her gold opponent.
Shannon Battles will have to do just that to defeat Kelly who has won 10 straight sets.
Fran Scott can settle the issue with a win over Stephanie Miller and make her point total out of reach but reverse the score and Stephanie opens the gate for herself and Shannon and Lindsay Lefresne.
Perhaps a little simpler then the men but 5 of the 7 women still have a shot at a medal.


Monday 2:30 PM
Well now, this could be a 5 man struggle to play for gold. Malcolm took a big step with a straight set win over Alex Scott and now he gets a chance at Dylan to really stir the stew. Meanwhile Kody has put on his dancing shoes as well. The boys from Sk will be rapping - each other. Very interesting.
Does Kelly get a firmer grasp on the top or will that dandy bowler, Lindsay, from the east get on board the medal ship. Stephanie takes a forced rest but just lingers behind the top spot.

Monday Aug 9

A big match underway in the ladies division. Two of the favourites are battling in this Round Robin 7 clash.

Defending champion Kelly McKerihen and Fran Scott are both chasing gold with hot starts to the competition.

Meanwhile if Malcolm Whtye is looking to climb into contention on the men's side it will have to be over the back of Alex Scott. There is a knot of 3 contenders at this stage at the top with Jon Pituley, Dylan Jacobs, the defending Canadian champion and Scott dancing for the lead position.

New leaders on the circuit emerge. That dynamic duo of Larry McLellan and Jurgen Fessler jump to the fore with one or the other being in the top three of 5 of the 6 tournaments played.

Jurgen gets the HP ' King Of The Hill' title for the week edging Larry by 2 points.

Wednesday July 7

Adding the Dr. Krupp Men's Pairs to the event list. A dandy tournament that has attracted a strong field for years. The winners get their names on one of the most beautiful trophies still in active use.

It appears the secret to winning on the circuit is having Bill Baxter as your lead.


The twelve stop 2010 season opened on Wednesday May 26th with 12 teams in action at the St. Marys LBC.
Mainly a Wednesday fixture, the clubs in these counties have held fast in continuing a men's event that is gender constrained. 
The boys are back and they drive some distance to try to stand tall at the end of the day.
By golly Remi Canuel and Peter Clarke wandered in from the Burlington area. Bob and Mike Bester dropped down from Hanover. Wayne Wright of Grand Bend and Joe Dorsch of Kitchener didn't mind the hottest day of the year, in fact hotter than any day we had last summer. Felt good.
And a slew of good ol' boys from London town and the locals including Len Boreham and Colin Campbell who were not only willing to pay to play but paid more pay to the victors of the day.


Perhaps this 'league' is in deference to the days of yore when the shops closed on Wednesday afternoon and the men had time for a leisurely roll up. I don't know the history but I will ask David Bell, my partner for the day. He can remember every bowl from every game that he played since he started some 27 years ago and significant shots that I made in games that I don't remember playing. On second thought it isn't that much of an accomplishment to remember my notable efforts. In any case if you ever have a query about bowling history, check with David.

This is a 14 stop tour centered in Exeter and St. Marys with Seaforth kind of opening but definitely closing the season and a dash of Thamesford and Clinton and a sprinkle of Mitchell.

Every week points will be allotted to the top teams based on the number of teams entered.

If 12 teams 1st = 12; 2nd = 10; 3rd = 8 

If 14 teams 1st = 14; 2nd = 12; 3rd = 10; 4th = 8

If 16 teams 1st = 16; 2nd = 14; 3rd = 12; 4th = 10
If 18 teams & Up 1st= 18; 2nd = 16; 3rd = 14; 4th = 12; 5th = 10

Any different number of entries, I will figure it out --- secretly.

Players will win points as a team but the scoring standings will be by individual.

This is a Wednesday gathering of good bowls and good fun. Nothing wrong with it but rarely do you see the same combinations from week to week.

We are just glad to have Wednesday afternoon off when we toil so hard the rest of the week.

Summer Sports Are A Delight

Just back in from watching two of our grandboys play in the Provincial Tyke Lacrosse Championships in the Whitby/Oshawa area. The concept they use is interesting having their season culminate in a 10 day Festival with all the teams attending after a season of area play and tournament involvement.
This seasonal play is used by the Provincial Association to rank teams and place then in groups from A to D for equitable playoff opportunity.
For example our boys ( Jagger with Burlington in 'B' and Shayne with Wallaceburg in 'D' ) played in a seeded 4 team round robin in a 16 team division. This preliminary play determined the  top two teams to advance to the top 8 single elimination Championship round.
Both boys played their 1/4 finals at the same time in the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby in different arenas. My conditioning program now includes interval sprints, spectator dodging and leaps and bounds. Wallaceburg knocked out, Burlington a winner in overtime. The latter to lose the semis in overtime the morning of Day Three.
I enjoy attending other sport's events for the obvious family reasons but I also like to see how they organize their play.
The road to gold was a building excitement. 
I believe it is time to return to a similar format in Ontario Provincial Championships.


Off to bowl to-day in Exeter, I will get back on the bowls scene when I return from my wayward ways.
