HIGH TEST FUEL NEEDED IN SCOTLAND

8 NATIONS IN PRE-COMMONWEALTH COMPETITION
Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre

August 26 - August 31

Away doing some Anniversary celebrating.
The detail of Ryan going for Gold.
Ryan Bester did what was necessary with his 21-16 win over England in Round 7 = +5. Australia defeated New Zealand 21-14 = -7 for the latter. Both finish with 5 wins and 10 points. Point differential breaks the tie and Bester with +16 to NZ +10 settled the score.
Saturday, A31, 10:00 AM
Trouble picking up scores from Bowls Scotland site this morning - not posted that I could find.
Dan Milligan at MVP on Face Book has the best information to my knowledge.
Ryan Bester did make it to the gold game losing to Australia 16-21. Another dandy international performance by our Canadian lad honing his skills in Australia.
Conditions are cool/cold, windy and a tricky green running at 11.5 sceconds.
John Bezear, George Whitelaw, Steve McKerihen, Chris Stadnyk " won in Fours but didn't get any help from others so will play the 5/6th game. They beat Scotland who were skipped by Darren Burnett 17-13. A great last bowl bt George ( Whitelaw ) trailed it away for three with Scotland laying three. Put us up 4 going home." Cas
The ladies teams finding the weather and teams difficult to handle.
Friday, A30, 8:30 PM
No wins today for Mary Ann Beath, Marg Lepere and Jackie Foster but like the way they hung tough against the top teams.
John Bezear, George Whitelaw, Steve McKerihen, Chris Stadnyk  ." The Fours lost to Malaysia in the last game after playing brilliantly against SA ( South Africa). They can still get up to 4th because other than NZ everyone is in the pack" Cas
' Momma told me there would be days like this ' might be the comment of Kelly McKerihen, and Amanda Berg . But again their play improved after the English spoiled breakfast. Oh, did I tell you what a messy weather day it was.
Friday, A30, 6:00 PM
Severe conditions today in Glasgow. High winds and rain. Temperatures were more like the fall.
Friday, A30, 2:30 PM
Shannon McElroy of New Zealand did edge Ryan 18-21 in Round 6 but the drama remains. There is a slim chance to still play for gold for Bester with a big win by Australia over New Zealand tomorrow and an equally decisive victory by Bester over England. A bit of a daunting task. Just to make it a meaningful day, Ryan needs this game to prevent a possible drop all the way to a final 5th position. High end play produces a flurry of change in the results.
Friday, A30, 10:15 AM
Real interesting  in the Men's Singles after Day 1 and Canada, Australia and New Zealand being undefeated.. Day 2 Ryan Bester lost to Australia in the morning  and then beat Malaysia at noon. Australia then got knocked out of their undefeated record by losing 7-21 to Scotland Clyde. Meanwhile New Zealand's loss, win on D2 makes it all even again with the top three and the late afternoon game to be played. It is mighty important for Bester to defeat New Zealand in Round 6 to keep his gold medal aspirations alive.
A inspiring game by Mary Ann Beath, Marg Lepere and Jackie Foster against the English side in Round 5. They have been chasing but no cigar the previous 4 games and came out to give the undfeated England ladies a run to the end losing 8-12.
Thursday, A29 11:00 PM
A great start by Ryan Bester in the second group of disciplines as he burst out of the blocks with two comfortable wins.He then locked horns with Scotland Clyde and edged this home team 21-20. Not surprising in that Ryan was the silver medalist in Singles at the 2012 World Bowls in Adelaide. But that was on the faster paced greens in the south and the adjustment is always a challenge for players when they make the long trip north. Australia and New Zealand are also undefeated and these long time rivals will be out to settle bragging rights starting with Australia and Canada in the morning.
Kelly McKerihen, Amanda Berg stayed close with New Zealand in the opener and then squeaked out a 13-11 victory over Malaysia in the noon start game. The good morning run took a bit of a hit when Scotland Kelvin showed no mercy to the visitors in the day finale.
The Men's Fours had an invitation to play but they didn't use their ticket to ride until the late afternoon. After a pair of whacks, John Bezear, George Whitelaw, Steve McKerihen, Chris Stadnyk   finished on a strong note by playing a very competitive and winning 16-15 win over England.
Mary Ann Beath, Marg Lepere and Jackie Foster dropped them all today but nary a moment did they wander from their goal of competiting with some of the best teams in the world.

With the first half of the 2013 Eight Nations Commonwealth Invitation Championships wrapped up, Canada has claimed its first medal.  The Canadian Men’s Triples team of Steve McKerihen, George Whitelaw and Chris Stadnyk captured a bronze medal after defeating New Zealand.
Wednesday, A28, 8:30AM

Exclusive Report From Glasgow by Manager Don Caswell
Round 4
Women's fours are on the board with a thrilling 1 shot win over SA. SA tied it in the 14th but going home front end played great position and Margie drew 2nd shot. The SA 3rd moved the jack to Margies bowl. Mary Ann drew a second shot and the SA skip missed with last. We didn't have to roll the last bowl.
Trips went down to England and are currently third. They play NZ and Aus in the next two games.
Kelly got on the Board with a thrilling 21-20 win over Scotland.
Ryan and John pulled out a win over with Malaysia with Ryan drawing to jack on the last bowl of the game to secure the win
Monday, A26, 10:30PM
A rousing start for a hometown Scot and his two Ontario playing partners. Whitelaw, McKerihen and Stadnyk opened a new practice and played firm. Down goes South Africa in the opener, then one of the home country teams, Scotland K. and rounded off by defeating Malaysia 16 -11 in the late afternoon game. The latter was coming off a win over Australia in Round 2. Canada will have a go at the Aussies late on the 27th who are tight behind in the early standings.
Ryan Bester, John Bezear, CA are down in the standings but that record could have been clean of loses as well. Tight games with New Zealand and South Africa and handed Scotland Clyde their only loss.
Liked that draw by Mary Ann Beath, Marg Lepere, Jackie Foster, Amanda Berg with Scotland Kelvin, the only blemish on their record on the first day of play. And Canada did put 15 points on the board against the undefeated English side.
Kelly McKerihen CA did not have fun today I would surmise. Top world competition and off your game can be a humbling experience. And we know Kelly has game.
Sunday, A25, 10:00 PM
A bit of a misnomer with the 8 Nations title since Scotland are entering two teams in both the women's and men's events. So really it is a 7 Nation affair but the invitations to this party are of a high end nature.
AUSTRALIA, ENGLAND, NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH AFRICA, MALAYSIA, CANADA, along with the host SCOTLAND teams. There is no catching your breath in this array of world class talent.
Perfect.
The year before the 2014 Commonwealth Games and all the countries High Performance Personnel are both analysing and solidifying their decisions on naming the team members for Kelvingrove stage two.
The time is nigh to start the full round robin format. FIVE hours difference to EDT so you may miss the morning game at 4:15 AM Ontario time every day. Two days of 3 games each day and a third day to complete the final round of preliminary play in the morning followed by  the medal and final position matches in the afternoon.
Remember this is a competition to get as much exposure as possible. Everyone plays the the same number of games -7 matches in each discipline plus the playoff.

Sunday the 25th
I have been struggling to keep awake. Long day today Sunday the 25th as Sandy and I did the connecting flight for Vancouver, Toronto, Detroit  in our return from the Nationals. I will be talking about them in a separate post. Some dandy innovations by Tim Mason and Committee.
