A golden weekend at the Campbellford Lawn Bowling Club

EMC Sports - The province came to town last weekend to crown the best in ladies singles lawn bowlers.

Even with two representatives competing, there was no gold for District 15. The district is home to clubs in Campbellford, Madoc, Kingston, Belleville, Trenton and Brighton. Stephanie Miller of Brighton and Sylvia Poulain of Campbellford were both forced onto the 'B' grid with losses in the first round. Miller dropped a 21 - 14 decision to Chris Pringle of District 13 while Poulain played the match of her life, a seesaw marathon against Gloria Cheung of District 12. There is no clock. In this game, the winner is the first player to achieve 21 points. And it could take a long time. After more than three hours of play, in the longest match of the tournament, Cheung won the contest 21 - 17.

"The competition is very tough," said Poulain. "You've got the best of the best here and everyone is playing very, very well. You work for every shot.

"It's really a matter of concentration and focusing on what you're doing."

The gold medal went to District Six representative, Marg Lepere of the Niagara Falls Lawn Bowling Club who won her final match 21 - 9.

"Stamina is a big thing in singles play," she said. "Because you can keep going and going and going. The idea is not to give up any big ends."

This is Lepere's third trip in as many years to a Canadian championship. Last year, she lost her first match in the provincial singles championship but rebounded with consecutive wins to win silver. The year before, she won a trip to the Canadian doubles competition.

"It's hard to get there once, let alone again and again," she said. "I feel very privileged."

And this is serious stuff. The runner-up in the gold medal match isn't awarded automatic silver like they do in the Olympics, she's got to fight for it, along with the rest of the survivors in the double knockout tournament.

District Nine rep. Kelly McKerihen of the Milton Lawn Bowling Club won silver while gold medal finalist, District 14's Laura Hawryszko of the Cobourg Club mined bronze.

Gold and silver medallists at the Campbellford tournament are eligible to compete at the 2010 Canadian National Championships at Edmonton, Alberta, from August 14 to 22.

Notably, the youngest competitor at the championship event was 13-year-old District Eight bowler Christine Schuknecht of the Chesley Club. In first-round action, she managed a dramatic win after watching Lynne Newton of District One whittle away her 16 - 3 lead. At the final end of the match, the score was tied at 20.

Christine was defeated on the second day of competition, 21 - 18 in the quarter-final of the silver medal round. Earlier this year, she competed in a provincial junior doubles championship and narrowly missed a bronze medal. Her dad Steve, a ten-year veteran at the game, says the best advice he can give his daughter is to "play your own game" and "enjoy the moment."

As the story has it, when Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA) officials visited the Campbellford site, they couldn't refuse.

"It's a beautiful setting here," said OLBA director Deb Hare. And she should know. She has visited lawn bowling clubs province-wide.

"That's something I enjoy doing, getting around to all the different clubs," she said. "If I can't win, I'll go and convene or umpire, I'm always available."

"My husband says I'm never home," she added with a laugh.

MEANDERING GTABOB ON SITE AT PROVINCIAL SINGLES

Singles on the Trent & in the Kawarthas

Ont Singles Championships   -  last chance to make the Ontario caravan to Edmonton this year.

The Men’s & Ladies Singles Finals were being played at 2 different locations this year . . . Ladies at Campbellford, Men in Bobcaygeon.

Haven’t played at either of these small town clubs . .  so  . . . . . with a rare free day on the weekend . . . . wife Pat & I decided to take a nice drive in the countryside . . . taking in a little bowling action along the way.

After a 2 hour drive (including the obligitory stop at Tim Hortons) we rolled into Campbellford. What a beautiful location for a lawn Bowling Club. The club is situated right in the middle of the Trent River . . water flowing by on 2 sides. I would find it hard to concentrate on my game with such a refreshing view from the green . . . but the Ladies who were nearing the end of their first game when we got there were oblivious to this as full concentration was on the job at hand.

A quick check of the draw sheet showed that some serious action was already under way before we arrived. Last years Gold (Susan Karlins) & Silver (Marg Lepere) Medalists were playing each other in the 1st game . . . what are the odds on that! . . . As well . . 2 other favorites on the Bob North odds board . . Kelly MeKerihan & Laura Hawryszko were playing each other in the opening round.

Both of these games were settled within 10 minutes of our arrival. Laura defeating Kelly & Marg beating Susan (didn’t see the scores).

We settled in beside rink 8 where Nanci Myers from our club was in a tight battle with Dist 4’s Sharon Farrish. Down 19 – 15, Sharon made a great last bowl shot to take out Nanci’s shot bowl to score 4 and tie the game. The satisfaction was short lived as Nanci came back to get the next 2 points to win.

Beside them on rink 7 I was told that Christine Schuknecht had just finished a roller coaster win over Lynn Newton . . .well up about 16 – 5  . . then a run by Lynn to tie it up before Christine won it in the end.

Last game on the green saw local favorite, Campellford’s Sylvia Poulain put up a great fight before losing 21-19 to Gloria Cheung.

After a quick lunch a watching a few ends of game 2 it was off for a scenic drive through Kawartha Lake country to Bobcaygeon.(just over an hour away). Didn’t see too much bowling as they were between games . . but can tell you the Bobcaygeon club has a beautifully manicured green  . . and a great deck in front of the clubhouse to watch from.

Got to cut the report short . . heading to Oshawa for Mens Pairs today.

You can see the 1st day results on the OLBA website.

[Please excuse the incompletes and/or incorrects. This is a week of busy and rush. Sacrificing accuracy for current news. Will update.]
A full day of Singles with Finals to-night. See you later.

Monday The essence of the tournament was wound up in a neat package but the king of Radio WOBA, Brian Fowler. He presented a Lifetime Bowling Achievement Award to master bowler Ron Jones and he read greetings from yearly participant Matt Houtby from Afghanistan. Ron that has exceled and Matt who allows us to try.
The Championship Teams at 3 wins Darryl Fitzgerald, Andrew Wagner, Kevin Schinbein, Derrick Bruder vs. Chuck Townsend,Dave Gray, Lee Ryan, Jack MacIntosh and Jurgen Fessler, James McLellan, Larry McLellan, Chris Johnson vs Al Ferguson, Susan Karlins, Bill Stevenson, Peter Wong.

Off to London to-day to spend a week doing some of my favourite things.
Bowling every day, seeing friends from near and far and helping players and guests enjoy our sport.
I am involved with a small but mighty committee that dedicates many hours to run this gem of a tournament.
Our annual mission is to sustain a meeting of talented bowlers that originated in 1895.
This show must go on.
Noreen Welsh, Brian Fowler, Peter Mutter and Wayne Wright and yours truly are the current bedrock of this wall of fame. Rita Wright and Andrea Weigand have jumped to the fore to serve on a special committee to help celebrate 115 continuous years of fun and games.
I will attempt to give you a a taste of the action from the day and catch up on other Province news at night.
This is the start of a bounty of competitive events that stretches from the young to the seniors.
What a sport!
Rink side for me. See you there.
