Singles on the Trent & in the Kawarthas
Ont Singles Championships - last chance to make the Ontario caravan to Edmonton this year.
The Men’s & Ladies Singles Finals were being played at 2 different locations this year . . . Ladies at Campbellford, Men in Bobcaygeon.
Haven’t played at either of these small town clubs . . so . . . . . with a rare free day on the weekend . . . . wife Pat & I decided to take a nice drive in the countryside . . . taking in a little bowling action along the way.
After a 2 hour drive (including the obligitory stop at Tim Hortons) we rolled into Campbellford. What a beautiful location for a lawn Bowling Club. The club is situated right in the middle of the Trent River . . water flowing by on 2 sides. I would find it hard to concentrate on my game with such a refreshing view from the green . . . but the Ladies who were nearing the end of their first game when we got there were oblivious to this as full concentration was on the job at hand.
A quick check of the draw sheet showed that some serious action was already under way before we arrived. Last years Gold (Susan Karlins) & Silver (Marg Lepere) Medalists were playing each other in the 1st game . . . what are the odds on that! . . . As well . . 2 other favorites on the Bob North odds board . . Kelly MeKerihan & Laura Hawryszko were playing each other in the opening round.
Both of these games were settled within 10 minutes of our arrival. Laura defeating Kelly & Marg beating Susan (didn’t see the scores).
We settled in beside rink 8 where Nanci Myers from our club was in a tight battle with Dist 4’s Sharon Farrish. Down 19 – 15, Sharon made a great last bowl shot to take out Nanci’s shot bowl to score 4 and tie the game. The satisfaction was short lived as Nanci came back to get the next 2 points to win.
Beside them on rink 7 I was told that Christine Schuknecht had just finished a roller coaster win over Lynn Newton . . .well up about 16 – 5 . . then a run by Lynn to tie it up before Christine won it in the end.
Last game on the green saw local favorite, Campellford’s Sylvia Poulain put up a great fight before losing 21-19 to Gloria Cheung.
After a quick lunch a watching a few ends of game 2 it was off for a scenic drive through Kawartha Lake country to Bobcaygeon.(just over an hour away). Didn’t see too much bowling as they were between games . . but can tell you the Bobcaygeon club has a beautifully manicured green . . and a great deck in front of the clubhouse to watch from.
Got to cut the report short . . heading to Oshawa for Mens Pairs today.
You can see the 1st day results on the OLBA website.
Gold Match ups:
Marg Lepere vs Laura Hawryszko
