Kaitlin & Dylan Saskatoon Bound

Come on you young'uns. Practice this game called lawn bowls and see Canada.
Kaitlin Ryan and Dylan Jacobs did just that and captured the gold medal and the right to play in the Canadian Championships in Saskatchewan in August. Now mind you by entering it isn't automatic that you receive an OLBA $1000 subsidy and a wonderful summer trip. Oh it's true about the money but you have to beat a talented 18 and under age group to reap the benefits offered.
And it may not happen immediately. Both of the gold medalists finished 2nd last year in the Ontario finals and both took the next big step up the medal ladder. From the files in 2008, "Kaitlin is an up and coming 15 year old." [ That makes her 16 now and an opportunity to own the podium for two more years. However there may be the group right behind with a different idea in mind.]
" Her backhand draw is beauty in motion.". A young bowler with the technique to take her game to a higher level.
I said Dylan was a 'tall lad' last year. He has continued his growth both in stature and game. He was on the Brian Fowler District 2 Fours team in this year's Ontario Championships and I can attest personally that he can play. He was a key player in knocking our team out in the Sunday morning 1/4 finals. From 2008, he has " a deft touch. He will win a lot in the future ". I wasn't thinking of it being so soon and against us.
Go, play, have fun and enjoy the hospitality of the people of Saskatoon.

FINAL RESULTS
Girls
Gold - KAITLIN RYAN
SILVER - CASSANDRA TRUDEL
Bronze - COURTNEY POSTMA

Boys
Gold - DYLAN JACOBS
Silver - JESSE CALDWELL
Bronze - PAUL TREVOR

Caldwell settles for soggy silver at provincials

Posted By DALE CLIFFORD , EXAMINER STAFF WRITER

Posted 4 hours ago

History was made in the rain at the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club (PLBC) yesterday.

London's Dylan Jacobs and host club's Jesse Caldwell achieved new heights in reaching the final of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA) under-18 boys championships.

With a 21-19 win over the 16- year-old Caldwell, Jacobs, a year older, won his first provincial gold medal and fifth medal in his fifth-consecutive Ontario championship appearance. He earned two silver medals and two bronzes in the previous four affairs.

For Caldwell, it was his first trip to a final and first medal following five journeys to the provincial set.

The local club wasn't finished there as 19-year-old Paul Trevor bested Nepean's Zachary Steel 15-2 to claim the bronze. There were no local bowlers on the girls' side.

Jacobs heads to Saskatoon, Sask., for the national championships and world qualifier Aug. 5-8.

With Ontario sending two representatives, he will be joined by Simcoe' s Kody Olthof, last year's Ontario Summer Games (OSG) champion.

Kitchener's Kaitlin Ryan defeated Niagara Falls's Cassandra Trudel 21-9 in the girls' gold-medal final while Tilbury's Courtney Postma beat Brighton's Stephanie Miller for the bronze. Both Ryan and OSG champion Miller head to Saskatchewan.

There was also competition in U25 with Milton's Kelly Mckerihen edging the Peterborough club's Katie Patenaude 2-1 in the girls' best-of-three final and Burlington's Trevor Whyte getting past Brighton's Steve Miller 2-1 in the boys' final.

They play 21-point games in U18 (15 if they request in some instances including weather), best-of-three seven-end sets in U25. In U25, they all qualified for Saskatoon because it is an open event and there were only four players in the category.

Jacobs finished with a 6-0 record while Caldwell ended up 6-1 in the 18-player boys' field. Caldwell had the extra game because he was in a larger pool. There were 12 in the girls' section. The top two in pools advanced.

Kelly McKerihen & Trevor Whyte Off To Conquer World

Two talented young bowlers captured their respective Ontario titles to-day in Peterborough.
There event is now called the Ontario Qualifier for the 2009 World Junior Cup Selection. It is quite a handle but does reflect the specific purpose of this event. It still has an under 25 age qualification, the former name, and is the start of gathering this age group to come to-gether from around the world.
Kelly and Trevor will now travel to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in early August to compete against other young Canadian Provincial winners. If my research is accurate, they are looking to book their flight to Warilla, Australia in April 2010 for the World event.

The Bowls Gender 2009 Challenge

THE CHALLENGE: Have the biggest deposit in the BOB ( Bank of Bob ) when the Big Three {Fours, Pairs, Singles } 2009 Provincial Championships are completed.

THE COST: Ten dollar $10.00 entry fee. All fees ( no administrative expenses, no cash to winners) will be donated to the CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY. Half of the proceeds will be designated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the other half to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Free entry if residing in New Zealand or Australia. Receipts will be issued by the Canadian Cancer Society if requested.I will tabulate and submit at the end of the challenge.

ENTRY: You can play singles or enter by team. In other words go it alone or get together with other(s). You can pledge your entry fee by email and then either wait to catch up with me somewhere in Ontario this summer or mail a cheque to my address ( check by email ). Multiple entries are accepted. You can be identified by your name, a team name or a numbered account ( a modern game ).

THE TASK: You will have $10,000 bob credited to your newly opened account on entry. Let us call it the Bowls Ontario (BO) stimulus package. Your mission, "should you choose to accept it ...", will be to parlay that amount into a substantial profit. The method of your madness is to wager any amount of your dollars( minimum bet of $1000 ) on the upcoming BIG THREE Provincial Championships. This isn't the easy win, place show of the races, you have to pick the winners of the event. But to make it a cinch to be successful you win if your selections qualify for the Canadians ( 1st or 2nd ). If you lose all your money, game over and placed on the bankrupt list. Despite baseball's Pete Rose rule you can, are even encouraged, to bet on your own team.

THE ODDS: You have and are creating them as we speak by submitting your ranking predictions. They are ever changing so you can submit your 'bet' when you judge the odds are best for your maximum return.

PAYOUT: the Parimutuel system will be used but with no 14.25% commission deducted before the winning distribution. Wikipedia has a clear explanation of the calculations.

PRIZES: The enjoyment of the camaraderie and the satisfaction of doing something for others without credit. However; To the top woman (team) and man (team ) a vintage Henselite spray marker. I traded a bowls bag for 9 markers in Australia in 2006. I am using one of those markers this year and it still works. Best they be in action. No guarantees but you at least will have a memento of your superior handicapping.

GENDER POWER: As an aside, I will tabulate the Women and Men totals to determine who wins the Handicapping Knobbie.

Provincial Pairs Ranking 2009

Remember, the rankings are a Cumulative Average Position Score based on all the submissions.
Put the teams in the order that you think they will finish at the competition in Ottawa.
You must select a minimum of 10 teams and rank them without ties. You can rank all sixteen if your crystal ball is so programmed.
You may rank just the women, just the men or both groups.
To give you an idea of the wizardy of the bowling community in Ontario here are the top 3 results from the Fours.
Team Ranked Finish
WD15 6th 1st
WD4 1st 2nd
WD9 2nd 3rd

MD6 7th 1st
MD12 12th 2nd
MD16 2nd 3rd

The Roger Thompson rink especially turned the table upside down and the two winners slipped to the fore when they got their foot in the door.

If a participant in the games in Ottawa, you can not rank your own team.

What will follow is the second event of three in the Bowls Gender 2009 Challenge. The bob 'wagering' will commence on Thursday June 25th.

I'll leave the light on for you.

District Pairs and A Thing Or Two

Off to Woodstock again only this time it is 2009.
Hope not to play in the predicted rain but I am getting use to it.
In any case good luck to all as we do the preliminary stage to advancement to our nation's capital.
Send me your results and I will tabulate as they arrive.

Travelled to Exeter on Wednesday for the weekly District 4 men's tournament.
Rolled bowls that were being self lubricated.
This Wednesday gathering is an excellent competitive tournament schedule on nice greens.
Tim Mason had heard the same story and flew in from Vancouver just to give it a try.
Good pace in Exeter and the word was top notch in St.Marys - fingertip.
I noticed that gas was in the $1.00 range on my 1 1/2 hour drive. As I hit the outskirts of Exeter I saw a sign that said 91.5 so of course I had to stop and fill up. I pulled into Smith-Peat Roofing. The time was 9.15.

WESTWARD HO - LOADING THE CHUCKWAGONS

Two wagons are loaded. We will send the women ahead to find a good campsite and to forage for food.
There were very satisfying wins on June 13 & 14 for 3 teams and a continuing dominance by the fourth.
Cheers and tears from the Niagara fan base saluted the Gold for Bill Falconer, Jim Lepere, John Bush and George Lalicich. Bill dedicated the win to his wife Joyce at home, Jim said finally the 'ring' after numerous ' near misses', Rooster didn't need to talk to express his emotion and George caught perhaps his first and last train to the Majors.
Believe or not the Golden women were more subdued but no less excited and thrilled with their straight run to victory. Skip Pauline Hill and Vice Pat Gemmel return to the Canadians after a recess. Pauline won a bronze medal playing Singles in Regina in 2003 and Pat got her start in Vice playing with the Lorry Bates' Cosburn Park teams in 1993 and 1995. It will be a new and exciting experience for 2nd Linda Miller and Lead Ursula Cooney. By the way Ursula has a preference for the Hanover greens for Provincial play. She was a Gold medal winner in Novice with the Laura, Diane Hawryszko team in 2005 on the same greens.
The odds were long for the Willowdale team of Rodger Thompson (S), Arnie Markowitz, Gerald Lampert and Sum Tang but paying no heed to paper calculations they proceeded to win 5 straight games after an opening loss to book their ticket to Victoria. They lost to the eventual gold medal winners but then rolled on to knock off all comers by an average winning score differential of 6 points. Their silver medal win was over the strong Brian McCartney team 14-9.
The 'TSN' turning point appeared to be in a later end when skip Thompson turned a 4 down situation into 1 up with his overweight shot.
Mr. Thompson and et al report to wagon 2.
Methodical, efficient, consistent is the trademark. A run of 4 straight trips to the Canadians. A blip in 2005 but Maureen and Carol covered by winning the Canadian Pairs Gold. Six summer vacations with a bag of bowls and four to a room in 7 years. WOW. Jo Anne Bugler (S), Maureen Thompson, Sharon Farrish, [ in general the seconds have varied some but the results remained the same - Gloria McFalls, Carole Fuller, Dianne Terry ] and Carol Carter have been the model of 'been there, done that'. Two gold and 4 silver in Ontario has been the forerunner to mining for precious medals throughout the country ever year- 2 Gold and 3 bronze and 2009 to come.
To top it off Jo Anne viced for Andrea Weigand along with Gloria and Carol to play the Canadian
Fours in 1999 (Gold ) and 2000 (Silver).
And the players in the Challenge thought they were so smart in picking the number one seed.

Hello Hanover

A good job by the organizers at the Hanover Fours.
It is a neat setup. A double-decker clubhouse with the kitchen and dining/meeting area upstairs and windows overlooking one of the two greens. A cozy bar is downstairs allowing for on tap and chat. Day one is always many mouths to feed in this event and only a minor delay to meet convenor Dennis Schmidt's efficient time lines. The host committee erected perhaps ( visualizing in my mind's eye ) ten of the portable garage style tents for the sun protection of the players and spectators. Nice touch.
Greens keeper Keith Vessie obviously had put time and effort into upping the pace and smoothing the surface. He overall succeeded in reaching the 10's in speed and provided a collection of readable rinks. They are short in Hanover and the draws are on an average 6 feet but these greens didn't cause you to lose.
So to committee chairperson Gerry Belair and the many helpers thanks for an enjoyable weekend.

Two 'bettors' only selected the gold medal winners in each gender competition.
And if you waited and watched the odds slipped and the return edged up for both teams.
Spadaboom and Triactor are the king of the hill in this first event. Both give indications of experience in the tricky world of knowing who and when.

This is the amount that remains in the accounts after 'wagers' were submitted. The lesson is clear. A few have more, the majority have less.
Do note the bottom group. Generous bowlers that find the cause right and are participating as they choose. They also have more bob than a goodly sum of the players.

" Leaving on a Jet Plane " & A 'WOW' Tournament Thought

Off to Hanover to participate in the Fours.
My purpose is to give it my best effort to assist our team to be successful.
If we qualify for the Canadians I will celebrate heartily with my teammates.
If we do not I will congratulate the Ontario reps and be a supporter in their quest for a National title.
So your source to keep your finger on the action is the OLBA website at www.olba.ca . Especially our interest is on the draw , always interesting and a key factor in team success and surprises, and the game scores as they tournament unfolds and builds the medal pyramid block by block.
I will take along my lap top but I am not sure of connection availability and besides I intend to focus on 1 rink at a time.
I know the Hanover folk will look after us real well. It is the character of smaller hosting centers to make you feel like you are coming to sit down in the family dining room and having a home cooked meal.
I will increase my mental notes and try to reduce my mental mistakes so I can relate some ' on the scene' stories when we return home.

Don Caswell and I tuned up by playing in Windsor on Thursday at the 'Frank Hudson ' , a true gentleman and dandy bowler, but came home with wet clothes and empty pockets.
We played through off and on rain during game one , had a warming and filling chicken pie lunch and got wetter in one end of game 2 due to off leaving and on increasing.
All this made me think of a suggestion by Wayne Wright one day when we were solving all the questions and problems of bowls in a between game rest.
Clubs depend on the completion of scheduled tournaments to assist in the financial support of their activities. Often rainouts are moneyouts. The norm is to try and play a full game and 1/2 of the second game to qualify as a completed tournament. We know it is hard to reschedule since the Ontario bookings are significant. As well even if you do find a new date some or many of your original entries have other committments.
Nearly always, if teams have arrived for the day, one game can be completed.
Says wise owl Wayne (WOW ) take all the allotted prize money, divide it equally( no positional ranking) and award it to the winners of game one. Tournament completed as scheduled.
Since this is one of Windsor's major tournaments they will try another date. You should try Windsor as well. The greens are running well, even in the rain.

There will be a new champion on the men's side this year. The Wayne Wallwork, Al Purcell, Al Handlechner, Gord Terwillegar 08 gold medalists were rendered obsolete by the Alan Steffen rink in the District play offs. In the ebb and flow of the hotbeds of the Ontario game, District 14 has gone to the top of my list in the overall competitive picture.
And what happened to the team that represented the epitome of golly good group play.
Well they didn't tire of each other but are just so successful ( 4 straight trips to the Canadians )that all of the team members have been bowling their way around the world.
I speak of the Steve McKerihen team. David Anderson and John Devonshire are just back from competing in the Atlantic Championships in South Africa and Fred Wallbank along with Steve will be in Malaysia for the Asia Pacific Championships in August. The latter will narrowly conflict with the Canadians but enough to render the other defending Ontario Fours team out of service.

The women do have Jo Anne Bugler's team ( 3 straight for this talented squad ) back and there is no surprise they are ranked at the top on the form sheet above.
Jo Anne was another member of the National Team in South Africa in the spring.
The defending gold medalists , Laila Hassan, Chrystal Shepherd, Doreen Creaney and Helena Ho are not together this year so it will nearly be a complete change-over for this first event.
