Saturday 11:15 AM At the Green- ON'A' Helen Wright, Jackie Hogan, Hazel Joffe, Joyce Kruss
7-6 after 8 ends over SK. ON'A' Kevin Jones, James Covell 13-6 over ON'B' Robert Steffen, Alan Steffen. BC Steve Santana Bronze over MB John Bjornson. SK Jean Roney Bronze over QC'A' Claire Sargent.

Saturday 7:15AM -Got in late evening last night and spent the time working through the final Round Robin standings. Kept flipping back and forth between Mike Doskas' Official website postings, the BCB Conditions of Play and my interpretations of the tie breaking procedures. With the help of some dramatic final round action and a close study of Appendix B, I believe the final positions are accurate. In any case      I do match the podium seekers with the Championship slate.
Five of the 6 Men's teams and the Helen Wright rink are playing for medals. Half play for Gold with one guaranteed but just two possible. The exact scenario holds true in the Bronze morning games. It's your morning riddle with coffee.
Medal Bound
Fours - What a steady and consistent team is the Steve McKerihen group. Year after year they come, they compete, they conquer ( a lot ). Nary missed a beat this year when son Adam stepped into the Second spot to replace travelling man John Devonshire and is a contributing member to the team.
Ironically Steve and David Anderson faced Chris Stadnyk along with Jeff Harding in the 2011 Pairs Gold game and the latter came out on top.An omen or a motivation! Whatever, it will be a skilled match.
Great comeback from a Day 1 start for the Stadnyk foursome. From 0-2 , 6 wins and a tie later, the stage is set for another elite roll up. Can they repeat choking up the only loss on the ON'A' Round Robin record?
ON'A' Helen Wright, Jackie Hogan, Hazel Joffe, Joyce Kruss were kruising after 6 rounds sitting in first position. But 3 straight losses lowered the podium position but their early play and staying relatively close in the final 3 RR games was just sufficient to grasp the final Bronze game spot.
Pairs - I know Kevin Jones and James Covell were itching to have another go at the Odgen/Bezanson duo ( 16-15 NS in the first game on the first day ) but the veterans Nelson and Dobson and the spoilers Singleton and Lidstone reordered the table sitting. They will be huffing and puffing at the Steffen house in the Bronze.
Speaking of the boys from Oshawa, it is a role reversal. Due to an injury suffered in the NS game, Alan and Robert have turned upside down. Robert took over as Skip against NB and AB. In the words of Alan, " Robert ... made a lot of great shots which contributed to our victories over NB and again today in our must win over AB. ...Now onto the Bronze medal game! It should be a good one. " That 20-13 win over gold medal game bound AB was a testament of their longstanding ability.
Singles - Jeff Harding is grooving. Deliberate, measured, consistent is delivering results. As mentioned above, won Gold last year - leading in Pairs. His only blip in the RR was a loss to MB John Bjornson, relatively unknown but skilled. Singles is a game you really play alone. Not even the other person on the mat is your opponent. You are your opponent. The next shot better, closer, positioned, with purpose. This native New Zealander will be ready in the quiet of the match.
I will come back later to comment on the Championships in general.

Friday Noon NEWS FLASH - From on the scene reporter Rosemary Stadnyk which makes it accurate but unofficial. ON'B' Chris Stadnyk, Mark Sandford, Gary Pickering, Ryan Stadnyk beat Alberta .The Lyall Adams skipped team were tied with ON'B' going into this match. The winner to the All Ontario Gold Game against ON'A' Steve McKerihen, David Anderson, Adam McKerihen, Fred Wallbank .
Alan Steffen and Rob Steffen big win over tied for first Alberta. Play for Bronze.
Jeff Harding and ON'B' Carolyn Cook, Ellen Edwards winners Round 9.

Thursday 9:30 PM Just in the house from a day at Grand Bend beach with a gaggle of grandkids. Looking at the Hump action.Updating and publishing as I work through each division.
ON'A' Steve McKerihen, David Anderson, Adam McKerihen, Fred Wallbank will play for Gold.
ON'B' Chris Stadnyk, Mark Sandford, Gary Pickering, Ryan Stadnyk 11 SD+50 will play for Gold if they beat Alberta. They defeated SK so even if the green men beat NS, the first tiebreaker prevails. Of course if ON'B' and AB tie and SK and NS tie along with a win by BC, that would create a  4 way tie in second place. Thus the need to start to look at the shot differential from all the round robin games. Advantage ON'B' after 8 rounds.
ON'A' Helen Wright, Jackie Hogan, Hazel Joffe, Joyce Kruss could get to the Gold medal game if they beat BC, who are tied for first, and SK loses to 9th place NS. If not successful in that pursuit they still aren't a lock for a medal game since the Round 8 loss to QC'B' not only jeopardized the golden road but could prove to be the team that replaces them for the Bronze game. It appears that despite the 2 win day for ON'B' Jo Anne Bugler, Kay Johns, Trudy Hill, Marilyn Lancaster, and even though they could achieve 10 match points, the loss to their Ontario cohorts could be the nay decider.
ON'B' Jeff Harding will play for Gold. In fact AB Dave Cox and Harding will have a trial match before the real medal game on Saturday. MB John Bjornson can tie Cox in match points but Cox was the victor in the first game of the RR which is the tiebreaker in this case.ON'A' Mike Bester is clinging to the medal ladder but the climb to  the Bronze podium is still possible with a victory over Steve Santana of BC Friday morning.
By golly Glenn Singleton of PEI can still jump up and bite you when least expected. He doesn't come to the Nationals every year although he certainly could qualify but when not too far away he comes and he competes. Did it to Kevin Jones and James Covell and knocked them out of the Gold hunt. They can play for Bronze but need to beat BC to fend off the chasers - including Alan and Rob Steffen.

Thursday. It's Hump Day at the Canadians. Will it be over the Hump and a scramble for the
medals or will it be checking the hotel dresser drawer to pack your homeward bag.
Yesterday was 'Sibling Day'. You live in the same house but you still have to prove your superiority. Ontario 'A' came out on top 4-2. Big wins for the Chris Stadnyk rink and Jeff Harding in Singles. The former to continue to overcome the 0-2 Day 1 start and Jeff to keep the chasers off his heels, including Mike Bester who would have been tied for the top with a victory.
Kevin Jones leap-frogged the Steffen pair and kept alive the chance to play NS for gold.
Both the McKerihen and Wright rinks are front runners but have some heavy sledding to do starting with this morning's games against Sask..
There is gold in them there hills.......

A Basket Of Bon Bons

OLYMPIC ATHLETES
"Imagine working four years for one moment. This is their Super Bowl. Bigger, even. Such a good lesson for all of us. They work hard for hours a day, day after day, with no one watching. There's no result right away. You can't see the benefit of what you are doing right away.... It's tedious, tiring, regimented. But if you don't do the tedious stuff, you'll never win. That's one of the things the Olympics can teach us all." Lovie Smith, Chicago Bear's Coach

CANADIAN JUNIORS IN KELOWNA -  From Terry Ryan

Here is a link to the junior championship draw starting tomorrow( Aug, 7th ). Looks like they will be posting real-time scores, so you can follow along as the games are played. Looks like all the Peterborough boys are in the same group. One of them should be meeting Cameron Lefrense in the next round, but they have to get by Grant Wilkie, last year's champ, first. The second group also has Robbie Law, the young giant killer, who beat all 3 Ontario boys last year in Montreal.
Other than the Ontario girls, I don't recognize any of the players on the female side. With the gold and silver girls from last year not in attendance, it should be a wide open competition.

Canada/ USA Olympic Soccer August 6
• I saw something for the first time tonight. Norwegian referee Christiana Pedersen made a game-changing call that incensed the Canadians when they were up 3-2 late in the second half. I have never seen a team in an elite-level game given an indirect free kick in the box for the opposing goalie being deemed to have held onto the ball longer than the six-second time limit. But that's exactly the call Pedersen made against Canadian keeper Erin McLeod. On the ensuing free kick, Rapinoe's blast hit Lauren Sesselmann in the hand, which seemed like a fairly straightforward penalty (though Canadian fans would probably disagree). Wambach nailed the spot kick, but there will be plenty of talk about that eyebrow-raising free kick call. If the referee had warned McLeod before, it might be a bit more understandable. If not, the U.S. most definitely caught a break. Grant Wahl
