Twelve teams travelled form Ontario and half will be in the medal rounds. Half again of the six are repeat contenders and the other 3 are babes in battle.Mark Sandford/Jeff Harding are making back to back appearances in the National finals with a bent to finish the job this year. On the other hand the ' new-to-you' Wayne Wallwork, Al Purcell, Al Handlechner, Gord Terwillegar group have been wowing the opposition near and far. One loss to SK this week after 4 straight at the Provincials makes a nice introduction to the Canadian Championships.
Both Jo Anne Bugler/Maureen Thompson/Carol Carter (Gloria McFalls )with Sharon Farrish this year and Steven McKerihen/David Anderson/John Devonshire/Fred Wallbank won Gold in 2007. They will compete for a different colour in 08 adding to an impressive annual run of bowling success.
On the other hand Susan Smith, Laura Hawryszko and Bob Bates have made their first appearance total immersion. It will be center stage this morning in the pursuit of bronze and to round off the competitive season.

Delicious
Love the dancing for positions and trying to decide who should lead.
Emphatically Mark Sandford/Jeff Harding*ONT 'B' Pairs * and Wayne Wallwork/Al Purcell/Al Handlechner/Gord Terwillegar *ONT 'A' Fours* are not only showing their fancy foot work but are looking for a date for the Grand Ball. Note below the other teams who have reached the opportunity to try and grasp the golden ring.

Women's Pairs -Completed
1 Marlene Cleutinx(S), Carolyn Doan BC GP 9 Pts 14 GOLD Round
2 Rosina Toal(S), Dixie Blackmore AB GP 9 Pts 12 [+13] GOLD Round
3 Susan Smith(S), Laura Hawryszko ON'B' GP 9 Pts 12 [+1]Bronze Round
4 Kerry O'Reilly(S), Rosalie Parsons-Brown QC GP 9 Pts 12 [-14] Bronze Round
5 Alice Hadley(S), Anne MacDoanald NS GP 9 Pts 11
6 Cecilia Gillespie(S), Sylvia Muz SK GP 9 Pts 9
7 Marg Lepere(S), Chone Chatterton ON'A' GP 9 PTS 8
8 Alice Chandler, B.Poppy Humphrey PE GP 9 Pts 6
9 Kris Madsen, Betty Grundy MB GP 9 Pts 6
10 Phyllis Young, Ann Cliche NB GP 9 Pts 0

This upstart Smith/Hawryszko pair played very well and in fact , as you can see, tied in points for a chance at the Gold. They lost to AB 14-17 which lowered the height of the podium but doesn't diminish their quality of play. They did beat QC 16-12 in RR.

Great finish by the Pairs women of Ontario. Lepere/Chatterton stung the top BC team 25-9 and Smith/Hawryszko showed their mettle with a close 17-14 win over SK.

The big match here is the Ont.'B' Smith/Hawryszko team vs SK Gillespie/Muz. A Smith/Hawryszko win and it is a three way tie - Ont'B', QC and AB who shouldn't have a problem with NB. Phyllis Young is the Grand Lady of National Championships but the tide is out this year.
The way I interpret the tie-breaking rules is that since Rosina Toal/ Dixie Blackmore beat both of the other teams in the RR, Alberta play for gold and Ont 'B' and QC play the bronze medal game.
A SK win or a tie game brings the host NS team back into the picture.

Men's Pairs Completed
1 Mark Sandford(S), Jeff Harding ON'B' GP 9 Pts 15 GOLD Round
2 George Shillabeer(S), Stan Heath AB GP 9 Pts 12 Gold Round
2 Pat Beggs, Jeff Mulherin NB GP 9 Pts 10 [+2] Bronze Round
3 Keith Roney(S), David Calam SK GP 9 Pts 10 [-2] Bronze Round
5 Gary Robinson(S), David Robinson BC GP 9 Pts 9
6 Ian Jones(S), Chris Bester ON'A' GP 9 Pts 8 [+7]
7 Andy Wepruk(S), Scott Wiley QC GP 9 Pts 8 [-7]
8 Gord Law(S), Rod Tester MB GP 9 Pts 7 [+2}
8 Charlie Reid(S), Ivan Doucette PE GP 9 Pts 7 [-2]
10 Keith Ramey(S), Mike Stewart NS GP 9 Pts 4

Sandford and Harding lose to Jones and Bester again (Kingston) in G1RR, find their mojo to roar back and tie BC in G2RR and hip, hop the rest of the week to the final. They beat AB 21-7
in the RR. Of course the RR scores are just for reference, not a predictor.

Ontario knocked SK men down and then picked them up.Sandford and son tilted Roney and Calam off the riser and the Jones/Bester win reclaims SK's berth in the Bronze game.

Nothing nicer than watching the running of the bulls sitting on top of the wall. What a great combination of games to decide the medal pairings. Sandford and Harding lost a close Gold medal game with Roney/Calam in Montreal last year. A push by Ont'B' could tumble SK off the podium completely. Jones and Bester have been in a tail spin after a strong start but could end the week on a positive note by concluding the BC scramble for a medal. AB or NB, one in one out perhaps. Four teams trying to crowd into the 3 seats left. Fun to watch.

Women's Singles Completed
1 Jean Roney SK GP 9 Pts 16 [+6] GOLD Round
2 Elaine Jones MB GP 9 Pts 16 [-6] GOLD Round
3 Mary Wright BC GP 9 Pts 14 Bronze Round
4 Gayell Slater AB GP 9 Pts 12 Bronze Round
5 Helen Wright ON 'A' GP 9 Pts 10
6 Valerie Carrie QC GP 9 Pts 8
7 Verna Murray NS GP 9 Pts 6 [+5]
8 Anna Panton ON 'B' GP 9 Pts 6 [-5]
9 Norma Lee Singleton PE Gp 9 Pts 2
10 Marg Fanjoy NB GP 9 Pts 0

Scripted perfectly. The accomplished veterans tied in points, at the top and playing for Gold. The up and comers close behind getting their chance at Bronze this year. Wait your turn.
A dandy way to end by Helen Wright with her 3 wins on the final day. Only an AB win over Anna in the final round prevented a climb to the medal round.

Roney and Jones in the final speaks loudly about longstanding skill and experience. The race here is for who will play for the bronze medal. In fact, since still a full day of games ( 3 rounds) , 6 of the 8 remaining competitors, at least on paper, have a chance to play Saturday. The kink for Wright and Panton is the fact they play each other to start the day.

Men's Singles Completed
1 Hiren Bhartu BC GP 9 Pts 14 [ +13] GOLD Round
2 Steve Sliman QC GP 9 Pts 14 [+2] GOLD Round
3 Steve Bezanson NS GP 9 Pts 14 [-15] [Bronze Round
4 Bob Bates ON 'B' GP 9 Pts 10 [+4] Bronze Round
5 Glenn Singleton PE GP 9 Pts 10 [+2]
6 Doug Propp SK GP 9 Pts 10 [-6]
7 Kevin Jones ON 'A" GP 9 Pts 8 [+11]
8 Art Wieliczko AB GP 9 Pts 6 [-11]
9 Gerry Venderbos MB GP 9 Pts 2 [+6]
10 Chris Trites NB GP 8 Pts 2 [-6]

Bob, you scamper. Like a classic car , quiet and smooth. The odds said Jones, the action answered 21-14 for Bates over Jones in the first game of the day in Round 13. That win was enough to put Bob in a 3 way tie for a ticket to the last Bronze train. His win over PEI, 21-15, and just being nipped 19-21 by SK gave Bates the edge in the tie-breaker.

A mighty interesting race to the final at Bedford. Jones and Bates to start and then Kevin plays the current top two in the standings. He already toppled Bhartu so if you know this bowler you know it is his choice of games to finish. Bob's key match will come bright and early against his fellow Ontario bowler.

Women's Fours Completed
1 Claire Day(S), Val Wilson, Amanda Berg, Christine Adams AB GP 9 Pts 16 GOLD Round
2 Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong(S), Clarice Fitzpatrick, Donna Law, Marilyn Baron MB GP 9 Pts 15 GOLD Round
3 Harriette Pituley(S), Rachael Larson, Clem Grant, Margaret Kushnier SK GP 9 Pts 14 Bronze Round
4 Jo Anne Bugler(S), Maureen Thompson, Sharon Farrish, Carol Carter ON'B' Gp 9 Pts 11 Bronze Round
5 Helen Lam(S), Mirand Tsang, Shirley Lai, Rita Patterson BC GP 9 Pts 10 [+3]
6 Laila Hassan(S), Chrystal Shephard, Doreen Creaney, Helena Ho ON'A' GP 9 Pts 10 [-3]
7 Shirley Wright(S), Claire Sargent, Caro;yn McGarr, Margaret MacNeil QC GP 9 Pts 8
8 Lena Cameron(S), Joanne Guilderson, Carolyn Ulch, Val Bechard NS GP 8 Pts 4
9 Clare Mullen(S), Janet Miller, Mary McKenna, Catherine Livingston PE GP 9 Pts 2
10 Nancy Cook(S), Patricia Albert, Irma Trueman, Joan Whitehead NB GP 9 Pts 0

The other scenario is if both Ontario teams lose the Bugler team maintain their slim 1 point edge due to an earlier tie vs Manitoba. A very competitive division. The last round went to SK 18-17 over Bugler and friends. It makes for a dandy replay.

If the Bugler foursome defeat SK and the Hassan crew do their job vs BC, it will be an all Ontario Bronze match. If one wins and the other loses , replace that team with SK. Ont 'A' defeated the Pituley team 25-12 in Round 3.

It was nip and tuck yesterday to see who might have to wash their whites one more time.
The old guard cut to the chase decisively by eliminating SK the young 30-12. Medal is their game, not always the same.

A big upset yesterday when NB upset QC and removed them from medal contention. Skip Lawrence Keegan started in District 1 and getting to the Nationals and winning that game will be his gold medal this year. I don't see a miraculous double coming in the NB-AB game to-day so I look for AB to play for Gold.
The rest is up to the Ontario teams. Wallwork & Co. dispatch BC and Kerihen + 3 do the same vs SK and it will be a Bronze match to-morrow for ONT 'B'.
This will a dandy finish at Bedford.

The Canadian Championships are underway. Current results are hard to come by but working to find a way to update round by round. As well both Donna and Chris Stadnyk have been sharing their personal messages to at least give us a taste of the seafood. Without Newfoundland but including two Ontario entries, the draw is a neat 10 team round robin in all divisions. Two points for a win, ties worth 1 point (no EE's) and the top four finishers are in the medal rounds. Twenty one points in Singles and 18 ends in Fours and Pairs with each event designated a separate venue to play the preliminary rounds.
I an assuming that the Ontario entries are starting off playing each other in the team events to prevent the perception of collusion if scheduled later. Believe me, that exercise is unneccesary. However I do see the Ontario Singles players don't meet until the last day of round robin play.
I don't know why that event would be different so perhaps it was a blind draw and it was all happenstance.
There are some key matches early on including the games that Ontario vs Ontario. For example Helen Wright and Anna Panton will play Jean Roney ( National Team, WOBA Female Player of Week) and Elaine Jones ( Gold Singles 2007 ) respectively in significant games on day one.
So keep an eye on all the results. We can be there by mind extension. Atlantic Daylight Time is one hour ahead.
