[ Stephanie defended her 2007 title with some timely draws winning a close 21-18 match against Kaitlin Ryan. Kaitlin forced the deciding game by roaring to a 21-10 win in the first game against Stephanie in the double knockout format.]

[ An up and coming 15 year old. Her backhand draw is beauty in motion. Lee Ryan's niece. Didn't see Lee's drive but the smooooth draw was there.]

Bronze - Cassandra Trudel
[ Any one of the top three could have won this title. Cassandra was nipped by Kaitlin in the semi-final game.
Earl and Janet Mayer, long time staunch supporters of Junior bowlers, still maintain an active presence with the game. Good coaching was evident with Cassandra's technique. ]

[ A basketball player who played a consistent game on the green court. Jacob was down 10-12 when the rain came. He didn't notice as he finished with a 21-13 victory.]

[ A tall guy with a deft touch. He will win a lot in the future. ]

Bronze - Paul Trevor
[ Defending 2007 champion. Edged by Dylan in the semi-final. Like the girls any one of the top three could have exchanged places. ]

[ Another young bowler with a good delivery. ]

I travelled to Woodstock on Sunday to see the quality of our young bowlers.
I missed the older bowlers - the former Under 25s now known as the Junior Men and Ladies.
But that wasn't a concern since I see many in adult tournaments and have for some time been delighted with their high level of skill, enthusiasm, developmental interest and downright good nature.

We took a trip to PEI last year and had the pleasure to see the most congenial, thoughtful, caring group of young bowlers - yes competing against each other full bore - and did it with skill and class. They played hard and hugged and laughed longer. It was a collection of Under25s from sea to sea at the Canadian Championships. From Ontario it was the Roth girls, Michelle and Erin, the Whyte boys , Malcolm and Trevor and Greg Wilson. The prize was high level - a trip to the World Championships. The sportsmanship was of the same caliber.

Why do I care? Because the survival of any sport is dependent on the development of a new core of participants that keeps the wheel rolling.
It has to have appeal, be socially enjoyable and provide success, hence the interest in the technical aspects of the game. If you can't put the bowl where you want to on a regular basis, you will walk away not on.
I personally would not be bowling, nor watching, if I didn't like my bowling community and be able to compete. I'm not a golfer because I am not very good even though I do well at the 19th hole.

So I wanted to see their delivery and their game composure when things didn't go well. That's all.
This was the Ontario Minor Bowls Championships or former 18 and under.
Some of the competitors had been eliminated but there remained 3 girls and 5 boys.
All put the bowl down smoothly. Focus during the long day was evident, concentration sometimes waned. They all tried, some cried. They had a good grasp of the game and in the main handled the highs and lows.
Sandy and I were ending a three day bowls swing and thought we might leave before the end.
I don't stay if ability isn't evident.
We got home at 8:30 PM.

Richmond Green team-mates and fellow bowlers)

Is there something more grand than to put

a few bowls on the jack? Can one have greater

pleasure than to play as a team and to take

proper grass and to use the right weight and

perhaps, just perhaps, get two ends

when one plays the great Al or the fellows from

Milton who are gentle and nice, but dreadfully

lethal when you give them an inch? Is the winter

less cold? Or is just wishful thinking that good

old Richmond Green feels so warm and inviting,

that we risk idiot drivers and the occasional winter

delays? But, of course, it's the people!! It's Miana and

her welcoming crew and the free entertainment bi-weekly

provided by Frank the Glaswegian and Ron the Oxbridgean

who forever and ever keeps calling the shots at the top of

his voice. And there's Rick, the quiet maestro who loves his

bananas and Helen who's kinder and more generous than most

and Roger the fellow uproarious with a heart made

of gold. And there's Bob and there's Anna, who're ever so

keen they arrive from the wilds of the north, no matter the snow,

the wind and the sleet. And there's William the Donald who

deserves to be knighted and surely, quite rightly, soon will.

And there're more, many more who're prepared to undertake

the long drive, from Milton and Burlington even, and

spend their six hours a week, battling Ferguson or Horn,

in pursuit of that "simplest" of pleasures, just to put a few

bowls on the jack.

After months of enforced hibernation, there is light

and there's sun and the promise of bowling on grass.

There is talk, often heard, of the "lands of the wood",

somewhere far, in the fabled domains of Down Under,

where the grass is so supple and kind, that the bowls

(or the 'woods' as they're called in those lands)

make their way on their own with the greatest of ease,

on a velvety surface of quality unheard and unmatched.

There is also, quite sadly, the sober perception

that to bowl on the emerald meadows of Ont

in late spring, where we heave and we throw and

we attempt decent draws, is at best not a treat

and it often results in a shoulder or hip out of joint.

But we do persevere, for we love this quaint art and

we know in our hearts that there's pleasure supreme

in that "simplest" of tasks (so the experts insist)

of just putting a bowl on the jack.

Great games! Cobourg ladies had to beat Auriel Daniel and Linda Butler (Oshawa) twice to claim the championship. They did it quite handily with some great bowling.
Alan Steffen and brother Robert were down quite a bit in the final game to the Peterborough team of Bob Guppy and Bob Matthews. But they kept chipping away and came back to within one point on the last end. An extra end was possible but Alan Steffen was having none of that and with the last bowl of the game made a beautiful shot to move the jack back for 5 shots and the championship. [ Mary White ]

History repeated itself in our pairs playdowns. McCartney and Woods vs. Jefferies and Laporte in the final. McCartney and Woods got up 12 - 2 after 8 ends just like in the provincial fours but Jefferies and Laporte came back for a 17-13 win. [ Gerry Laporte ]

The Thrill of Victory The Agony of Defeat

Wayne Wallwork won gold with a last bowl trail.

Larry Wales advanced to the silver medal game on his last bowl draw to the jack.

The opposition in both cases was the Brian McCartney team. If Wallwork doesn't grab the jack, McCartney/Wood/Jefferies/Laporte defend their 2007 title.

If Wales doesn't fine the exact line and weight , the early Jefferies draw in front of the bowl keeps the Cornwall/Ottawa area team alive for a repeat trip to the Canadians.

Literally the pendulum swings with delicate application.

Brian Fowler pushed the McFadyen team shot through the head with his last bowl. But Mark had one of his own, used the seagull for his line and reclaimed the victory.

Laila Hassan played an over and removed an opposition bowl promoted inadvertently by a teammate. Gold was the prize.

I simplify of course. It was fours not singles. Head building, position bowls, power when needed sustain the momentum necessary for success. It is the recipe that gets a team to the point of last bowl heroics.

I saw the above examples. I heard about the JoAnne Bugler team win.

Apparently JoAnne's last bowl drive did a bit of erractic pathfinding to eventually move the jack enough to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

It is not rare in bowls. The stakes in this case are what buckles your knees and twist your heart.

Strangely it is a shared sweet and sour dish for skilled teams.

The losers were about to sit down to a long anticipated feast until their chairs got pulled out from under them. The jolt is real.

The winners got a last minute invitation but it doesn't taste right. You are apologetic and subdued, whether expressed or not, in what is a significant victory.

I once had to confront a perceived commotion on our doorstep in the middle of the night.
Darkness doubles the volume of sound and reduces your courage by half.
Losing a Canadian qualifier in Ontario is twice as hard to digest because your odds to be in the same situation are similarly reduced.
Gord Terwilleger, who is a top notch bowler confirmed by his participation in the Canadian Seniors in 2004, has been trying for 39 years to secure his first trip to the Majors.

But the beauty of sport is that the experiences become our lifes lessons.
Accept and adjust. Realize we don't control fate. Tuck it into your memory bank because you will discuss it in the future ( the losers much more than the winners). Get up and get on with your next opponent. Be assured you too will have the opportunity to be on the other side of the tossing coin.

Oh, by the way. The doorstep fight was a radio alarm gone awry tuned to an evangelistic speaker.
Things aren't nearly as bad as they sometimes first seem.

THE FANTASY BOWLS SITE TEETERS ON BANKRUPCY

Wayne Wallwork, Al Purcell, Al Handlechner and Gord Terwilleger burst out of the gate on top and never looked back. Wire to wire at 12 to 1 was a sign of things to come on the men's side.


How could we have home field Larry Wales at 8-1. Combined with Mark McFadyen's (11 to 1 ) and Tom Roth's ( 14 to 1 ) teams gritty performances, the Bowls Ontario Bank ( BOB ) had to arrange for a quick subsidy from the government. Told them I supported green initiatives.


Lordy, lordy what is going to happen at the Pairs.

Rode to a tournament in Windsor to-day with Tom Roth , the longest odds on the men's side.
He just smiled.
Unknown and/or a lower relegation is a motivator.
I first saw two guys from District 16 in Sarnia in the Provincial Pairs who were unknown.
Gerry Laporte and Dave Jefferies could play then, set out to get better by travelling to competitive venues and now are integral parts of the defending Ontario champions.
Combining with the experienced and skilled back end of Brian McCartney and Ron Wood makes for a team that intends to do it again.
Da'Tara won the Belmont Stakes. The odds were 38 to 1.

What does this all mean?
Nothing.
The draw is key. Long shots will inevitably make their mark and quite likely by the weekend.
The double elimination format allows this tournament to be played without seeding.
My thinking is that if you lose two games, no matter how difficult your draw, you have not performed well enough to qualify for the Canadians.
Paper games are fantasy, the real action punches the Halifax ticket.
As Tom stated, ' there are no mail-in results.'
